• 1999 - CAHPS Consortium began work on a survey to assess patients' experiences with medical groups and physicians, called the CAHPS Group Practice Survey.
• The group revised the survey to encompass multiple levels of ambulatory care.
• August 18, 2004 - AHRQ issued a notice in the Federal Register inviting organizations to test the survey.
• Spring 2005 - English cognitive interviews conducted.
• August 2005 - Second draft of survey released.
• September 2005 - English & Spanish cognitive interviews conducted.
• July 2006 - AHRQ submitted the survey to the National Quality Forum for endorsement and worked with NQF to adjust the survey and add sampling and administration guidelines.
• November 2007 - NQF endorsed CG-CAHPS survey.

As of July 30, 2008, there has not been any organization offering to sponsor the survey nationally.
