Medical Groups & Practices CAHPS®
Clinician & Group Surveys (CG-CAHPS)

PRC has been administering this survey for clients since its initial release in 2007, and we have continued to field various versions of the instrument since that time, as medical groups have become interested in the different versions available from AHRQ.  Some have been measuring patient perceptions for years and have supplemented their existing data with this survey; for others, the CG-CAHPS instrument has been their first effort with measurement.  Regardless of where you are starting from, PRC will assist you with selecting the version that will best meet your needs.

CMS has not yet developed a program to sponsor this survey, meaning, survey administration is not yet required.  We do expect this will occur at a national level in 2013 or 2014.  In the meantime, some states have begun public reporting initiatives that utilize a version of the CG-CAHPS survey, and some medical boards are beginning to accept data from this survey as part of their Maintenance of Certification requirements.  If you have a need or desire to submit your data to another organization, PRC is happy to assist you with this and will help to ensure that all applicable survey administration guidelines are being followed.

What's New

(11-28-11) In response to feedback from stakeholders and users, the CAHPS Consortium has updated the Clinician & Group Surveys. Read about these surveys at https://www.cahps.ahrq.gov/Surveys-Guidance/CG/About-CG.aspx.

Changes include the following:
  • Questions ask about experiences with “this provider” rather than “this doctor.”
  • The Child 12-Month Survey (formerly referred to as the Child Primary Care Survey 2.0 (beta)) and the Visit Survey were finalized.
  • Supplemental item sets related to patient-centered medical homes and health information technology were released (see below).
  • A question about mental health status was added.
  • The questions used to identify respondents with chronic conditions were moved from the core survey to the supplemental items.
  • An e-mail administration mode and site-level sampling recommendations were added to the instructions for fielding the survey.

The CAHPS Consortium is currently reviewing all of the supplemental items for the Clinician & Group Surveys. The 2.0 versions of these supplemental items will be available in 2012.
